UINR is Cape Breton’s Mi’kmaq voice on natural resources and the environment. Forestry, marine science research, species management, traditional Mi’kmaq knowledge, water quality monitoring, and environmental partnerships are among the organization’s responsibilities.
By integrating netukulimk (traditional Mi’kmaq management) with traditional and conventional ways of understanding, known as Two-Eyed Seeing, UINR takes the lead on best-management practices in Unama’ki. They work closely with government and First Nations organizations toward equal participation in natural resource management.

The Canadian Parks Collective for Innovation and Leadership (CPCIL) is a collaborative project housed in the UBC Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) and delivered in collaboration with Mount Royal University's Institute for Environmental Sustainability, Royal Roads University, Université de Moncton, and the York University Faculty of Environmental and Urban Changes. The project is funded by the Canadian Parks Council, which represents Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial park agencies and works collaboratively with the entire continuum of parks and protected areas.

The mission of UBC Botanical Garden is to assemble, curate and maintain a documented living collection of temperate plants for the purposes of education, research, conservation, community outreach, and public display. UBC Botanical Garden was founded in 1916 and is Canada's oldest university botanical garden with approximately 30,000 plants from 8,000 accessions, 500 taxa.
Our Sustainability and Community Programs department designs, develops and facilitates education, outreach and community events aimed at connecting people with plants, biodiversity, and the natural world. Annually, we engage over 5,000 guests in place-based learning through our tours and team building experiences. We train, mentor, and supervise students and youth leaders from UBC and surrounding communities on communicating the complexities of ecology, climate change, and sustainability.
