PLT CANADA IS ON THE ROAD

The PLT Canada team is excited that the Green Ride for Green Jobs is now in its third week. Zac Wagman, PLT Canada’s Green Jobs Manager, has so far travelled through over 20 communities in British Columbia and covered close to 1,500 km. By the time he’s finished, he’ll have visited over 50 Green Jobs employers, in over 34 different communities, across nine provinces.

Zac is cycling from Victoria to St. John’s on a wooden bike from Montreal’s Piccolo Velo. His journey began on May 13 and he will cover over 8,750 km in four months. Kenauk Canada is donating ash lumber, which is certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, to Piccolo Velo, thereby helping Piccolo’s efforts to gain SFI Chain-of-Custody certification for its innovative and environmentally friendly bicycles.

Throughout this trip, Zac and PLT Canada will be profiling youth in green jobs and sharing their experiences over social media. We are doing this in an effort to elevate the types of careers that exist in the forest, conservation and parks sectors, and to help motivate more and more youth across Canada to get involved in outdoor work.

“I’m excited to be biking across Canada and meeting youth working in Green Jobs,” said Zac. “These are great jobs that can lead to fantastic careers in the forest and conservation sectors. But these kinds of opportunities weren’t part of the conversation when I graduated from high school. For example, I wish someone had told me I could become a professional forester, and what kind of training and education that takes. I’m hoping the Green Ride will help change that.”

All because of one teacher doing one activity with this one little girl. Now imagine the positive impacts 145 million students have made on our environment, thanks to…
