The Green Ride Brings the Green Jobs Message to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland

September 20, 2019

As the Green Ride for Green Jobs cycles hard toward the finish line in St. John’s, N.L., on September 23, Zac Wagman, our “green rider,” has been spreading his message of sustainability and youth employment across Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

The wind and rain from Hurricane Dorian didn’t stop Zac and his brother Nick from staying on schedule.

One of their first stops was a meet and greet with students at Dalhousie University in Halifax who turned out to support the Green Ride. “We were there to talk about green jobs and listen to students tell us what their dream green job is. For most of them, being outside and advancing the cause of sustainability are key,” Zac says.

After the Dalhousie visit, Zac dropped in at Mountain Equipment Co-op to talk green jobs, sustainability, and wooden bikes. Store staff and local bike enthusiasts were impressed that Zac had cycled more than 8,000 km on his Picolo Velo wooden bike since leaving Victoria in May.

One of the first stops after leaving Nova Scotia for Newfoundland was at Corner Brook Pulp and Paper. The company is a Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified organization. SFI oversees Project Learning Tree Canada, which administers the Green Jobs Program.

“It was great to learn first-hand about how Corner Brook Pulp and Paper is sustainably managing its forests through a robust forest management plan,” Zac says.

Zac will be crossing the finish line of his epic 9,000+ journey on September 23, in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The PLT Canada team will be there to greet him and to celebrate his accomplishment, and we hope you will join us! For more information about the event, see our Facebook page.
