Test drive forestry careers with Ontario’s heavy equipment simulatorAugust 21, 2024By James Thordarson, Senior Coordinator, Forest Education, SFI In the face of growing labour shortages in Ontario’s forest sector, the province is stepping up to inspire and develop its workforce. A key technological aspect of this is a heavy equipment simulator that provides an engaging, hands-on way for Ontario youth to explore diverse career opportunities in forestry. “The simulator is designed to give students a real sense of what operating forestry equipment is like. It’s not just about learning how to use the machines, but also about exploring potential career paths and gaining an appreciation for the field,” said Alexander Carlucci-Hercun, Forestry Workforce Development Coordinator at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. A fun, fast, risk-free way to chart a career path in sustainable forestryThe portable simulation machine looks like something built for an advanced video gamer. It takes 10 minutes to set up and has pedals and joystick controls. Users say the simulator is fun to play with as they get acquainted with how various virtual machines move and operate, such as a harvester, log loader, excavator, and bulldozer. The simulator offers scenarios to teach students how to operate logging equipment without risking bodily harm or damaging actual structures. Students can test their skills cutting logs to length after they harvest them with a simple click, and then attempt to move those logs into a small square to finish on time. They can also try their hand at loading logs into the back of a trailer without hitting the edges of the trailer. Teachers noted that the simulator is an effective educational resource, capturing students’ interest and helping them consider a future in forestry. The interactive nature of the simulator makes it a valuable tool for career exploration and skill development. The technology also quickly assesses the skill level of its users, a critical tool for instructing beginners.
Fostering the next generation of leaders in forestry
By providing young Ontarians with an engaging and educational experience, Ontario’s Heavy Equipment Simulator Loan Program helps to build awareness of forestry careers and encourages a new generation to explore opportunities within this vital industry. As the sector evolves, these kinds of innovative programs will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring its future success and sustainability.
