Canada’s forest and conservation sector is an essential and exciting field that needs young professionals. By working in a green job, you can provide solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing challenges, like climate change.

To learn more about the different types of jobs in the sector and how you can land one, this interactive online panel will feature the career pathways stories from those in the private, government, and non-profit sectors. You will rotate hear how each panelist got into their field, what a typical day looks like, and their tips on standing out during the first few months on the job. Come prepared with questions for panelists and to network with other young professionals!

Panelists

Headshot of Janice Lam Janice Lam, Forestry Project Coordinator, York Region

Janice Lam is a Forestry Project Coordinator at York Region, she has a Masters of Forest Conservation from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Geography and Environmental Management from the University of Waterloo. She is also a Registered Professional Forester and has diverse experience working at environmental non-profits, conservation authorities and different government bodies at the municipal, provincial and federal level. She is passionate about the urban forest and tree equity.

 

Headshot of Sarah Todgham Sarah Todgham, Policy Manager, Ontario Forest Industries Association

Sarah Todgham is a Policy Manager with the Ontario Forest Industry Association (OFIA). In this role she is responsible for monitoring, tracking, evaluating, and reporting on policies, emerging issues, and government initiatives relevant to Ontario’s forest sector. This includes keeping members informed and developing submissions responding to key government proposals. Sarah also acts as the Secretariat for the Woodlands, Manufacturing, Algonquin Park, Biomass, and Indigenous Relations OFIA Committees.

Lauren Cogar is a Forestry Technician of the Regional Municipality of York, passionate about urban forestry. Graduated from Fleming College – Urban Forestry Technician program. Currently focusing on municipal forestry operations, contract management and continual growth.

Maddie Kennedy is an Operations Forester working at Weyerhaeuser in Kenora, Ontario. Maddie is a graduate of Lakehead University’s Honours Bachelor of Forestry program and has been working in the forest industry for more than eight years. She is currently the Chair of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s Central Canada Implementation Committee. Maddie enjoys canoe camping, snowshoeing, and enjoying Canada’s beautiful forests

Jess is passionate about creating connections between people and forests. Jess Kaknevicius has spent over 15 years in the non-profit sector including nearly nine years with Forests Ontario in a range of management and director roles between 2009 and 2018, focusing on growing education and awareness programming, fundraising, and supporting strategic development for the organization.
