PLT Canada’s Job Seeker Panel on October 24, 2024 from 12–1 pm PT / 3–4 pm ET shared forestry leaders’ best tips on growing your career pathway in the forest and conservation sector. 

Each panelist will shared their story, how they progressed on their career pathway, what their current role is, and what they think job seekers should consider on the job hunt! 

 


Speakers

Dr. Temitope Ojo, Supervisor, Regional Resources Information & Analysis Unit, Northwest Region, Regional Operations Division Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources  

Dr. Temitope Moses Ojo was born and raised in Nigeria and moved to Thunder Bay, Canada, in 2019 to pursue a PhD in Forest Sciences at Lakehead University. With over 15 years of experience in leadership, resource management, conservation, GIS, and policy development, Temitope has built a diverse career in both Nigeria and Canada.

His academic journey began with a Bachelor’s in Forestry and Wildlife Management and a Master’s in Forestry Economics and Management at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). Temitope has held various roles, including positions at FUNAAB, the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Natural Resources.

In Canada, Temitope gained local experience through roles at Lakehead University, volunteering with various organizations, and holding leadership positions such as President of CUPE Local 3905 and Vice Chair of CIF Northwestern Ontario. Currently, he serves as the Vice President of the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Board of Directors and as a citizen representative on the Anti-Racism & Equity Advisory Committee for the city of Thunder Bay.

As the Supervisor of the Regional Resources Information and Analysis Unit at MNRF, Dr. Ojo leads strategic planning, data management, and GIS projects, contributing to ecological sustainability in Northwestern Ontario. He is passionate about mentoring others and fostering an inclusive, collaborative work environment.

Louise Simpson, CAE , Registration Manager, Ontario Professional Foresters Association 

Louise Simpson, CAE, is the Registration Manager for the Ontario Professional Foresters Association (OPFA), where she guides applicants through the process to become licensed as a Registered Professional Forester (R.P.F.) in Ontario. An immigrant from the UK with a background in forestry and association management, she understands some of the challenges that can be faced when relocating to another country. Louise will be speaking about the process to become licensed as an R.P.F. and the value of the designation, as well providing information on OPFA programs that are available to help R.P.F.s in Training establish a network and develop their career. 

Gerry Gomez, Vice president, Sales and Strategy, HLC Talent Management 

Gerry Gomez is a seasoned HR and staffing professional with 20 years’ experience, particularly within the manufacturing and forest products industries. As the VP Talent at HLC Talent, Gerry brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in talent acquisition, management, and development, consistently aiming to connect people with work opportunities. Gerry’s career is marked by his passionate commitment to enhancing employee experiences and fostering inclusive workplace cultures—his efforts are focused not only on meeting immediate staffing needs but also on foreseeing and planning for future talent requirements, ensuring sustainable growth and stability within the sector.
