The mission of UBC Botanical Garden is to assemble, curate and maintain a documented living collection of temperate plants for the purposes of education, research, conservation, community outreach, and public display. UBC Botanical Garden was founded in 1916 and is Canada’s oldest university botanical garden with approximately 30,000 plants from 8,000 accessions, 500 taxa.
Our Sustainability and Community Programs department designs, develops and facilitates education, outreach and community events aimed at connecting people with plants, biodiversity, and the natural world. Annually, we engage over 5,000 guests in place-based learning through our tours and team building experiences. We train, mentor, and supervise students and youth leaders from UBC and surrounding communities on communicating the complexities of ecology, climate change, and sustainability.
With over 100 years of history, UBC Botanical Garden curates a dynamic collection of plants for the purposes of education, research, conservation, community outreach, and public display. The Garden has a legacy of connecting education initiatives with community outreach. It’s many ecosystems and gardens have been stewarded by a diverse range of employees to advance conservation and training into the fields of horticulture, plant conservation, and environmental education. UBC Botanical Garden hosts over 100,000 visitors annually through admissions, events, education, and volunteer programs. Our living collection of plants and unique gardens serve global conservation efforts through rare collections of maples, magnolias, and more. We host 34 full-time equivalent green jobs and employee many students each year in our various departments (education, administration, horticulture, and research). As a unit in the Faculty of Science at University of British Columbia, the Garden is connected to and collaborates with local and global networks.
