Middlesex County is an upper-tier municipal government in Southwestern Ontario that provides regional leadership and services to its eight member municipalities. The County plays a central role in delivering and coordinating services that support residents across both rural and urban areas. Its responsibilities include road and bridge infrastructure, community and social services, planning and economic development, emergency medical services, libraries, and long-term care. A major focus of the County is the stewardship of its forests and natural heritage systems, protecting woodlands, watercourses, and natural landscapes that define much of Middlesex’s rural character and contribute to its environmental sustainability.

Company History

The history of Middlesex County stretches back to the early 1800s. Township meetings were first held in Delaware in 1800, with John Wilson appointed as the first Warden in 1842, followed by William Niles as the first elected Warden in 1850. One of the County’s earliest priorities was the establishment of a formal road system in 1853, which laid the foundation for the current network of County roads and major highways, including connections to Highway 401. Over time, the County has evolved through municipal restructuring and administrative reforms, but it has consistently remained a hub of governance, planning, and service delivery for the region.

Today, Middlesex County is primarily rural, surrounded by agricultural land, woodlots, and natural areas, but also contains strong small-town centres. Its governance is overseen by County Council, composed of the mayors and deputy mayors of the local municipalities, with a Warden elected annually to provide leadership. The County continues to emphasize sustainable growth, balancing rural preservation and natural heritage protection with the infrastructure and services needed to support population and economic expansion.
