The Ministry of Forests is the Province’s agency responsible for the management of forests, lands and range and integrated decision making for water, fish and wildlife, archaeology permits and authorizations and natural resource compliance and enforcement. The Ministry includes an integrated Research Program to provide timely, relevant, high quality, credible information and to inform innovative solutions to British Columbia’s complex natural resource sector challenges through research, science, data, and extension.
In 2021 the Research Program of the Ministry of Forests celebrated 100 years since hiring the Ministry’s first researcher in 1921. The research program now includes a multi-disciplinary research team positioned throughout the province of BC.
The Coast Area research team includes silviculture, hydrology, geomorphology, fish biology, wildlife ecology, soil ecology, and forest ecology researchers. The team is based out of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.
