Satinflower Nurseries inspires and empowers people to connect with nature through native plants. We strive to connect with the community through three main branches of the business: 1) growing indigenous plants and seeds 2) residential and biological consulting 3) public outreach/ engagement.

We are leading experts on southern Vancouver Island in native plant and seed production and offer about 200 different plant species. The plants and seeds provided by Satinflower Nurseries are native to a variety of habitats on Southern Vancouver Island, including meadows, woodlands, forests, wetlands, beaches and more.We are Victoria BC’s only plant nursery retailer who offers exclusively native plants and make native plants and seeds available to everyone from homeowners to restoration practitioners and Indigenous communities. Our nursery strives for excellence in the health of the environment in our growing practices. Herbicides, pesticides (including neonicotinoids), and chemical fertilizers are not used in our plant or seed production.

Our consulting team manages hundreds of landowner and land manager consultations annually, working with all levels of government, First Nations, non-profits, and private property. We help people meet their restoration objectives, guide people through the process of restoration, and supply native plants and seeds for their projects.

At the core of our business is a mandate to help educate the public about native plants, nature, and restoration. We offer hundreds of educational events annually, ranging from webinars and talks, to long-term courses. We also develop educational resources related to all topics of native plants.

Company History

Biologists Kristen and James Miskelly founded the nursery in 2013 as Saanich Native Plants. By 2015, we were recognized as the go-to location for native plants. In 2016 we received an environmental business award through our district. Moving into 2015, we expanded our native seed production to a half acre in Saanich and soon after grew our native seed operations to a second location in Cobble Hill. We have been successful over the years to encourage the use of native seed for home and large-scale restoration in the region. In 2018, we were recognized as one of the finalists for the 2018 EcoStar Awards for ecological stewardship in business.

Most recently, in 2021 we underwent a name change and incorporated the business from Saanich Native Plants to Satinflower Nurseries Ltd. because of our expanding geographic scope. In 2021, we purchased 2 acres in Metchosin BC to expand our native plant propagation. We also began construction of a small nature shop that will open in 2023.
