The Ontario Professional Foresters Association regulates professional foresters in Ontario.
The Ontario Professional Foresters Association was created through provincial legislation in 1957. The people of Ontario gave the professional foresters the right to self-governance and practice through the Professional Foresters Act that became law in 2000. This means that employers and the people of Ontario receive consumer protection and assurance that professional foresters are competent and provide forestry services that protect the public interest. Today there is a shortage of professional foresters in Ontario as many employers such as municipalities, Conservation Authorties, environmental consultants, forestry non-government organizations, forest products companies, etc are all seeking to employ them. The Ontario government reports that graduates from accredited forestry university programs have 100% placement within 6 months of graduation, the highest rate of job uptake of any regulated professional university program
The Ontario Professional Foresters Association has close to 1,000 members that provide a variety of professional forestry services to the people of Ontario. Professional forestry services include calculating wildlife habitat supply, allowable timber harvest, protection of biodiversity, calculation of forest carbon, forest conservation, etc.
