Maitland Conservation is a community based organization dedicated to protect and enhance local water, forests and soil. We work to build watershed resiliency to reduce flooding and soil erosion and to improve water quality. Resilience refers to the ability of the watershed to absorb the impacts of disturbances such as climate change, drought, flooding, pests and invasive species while still having healthy forests, rivers and soils.
We are part of the network of Ontario’s Conservation Authorities. Established in 1951, we are jointly owned by our member municipalities and report to our Board of Directors. Our activities are driven by local municipalities, landowners and community organizations.
We are committed to providing effective-community-based conservation services in a cost efficient manner. We are pioneering rural storm water quality to improve water quality within our watershed. We have planted more than 1. 4 million trees since 1951. We are active participants in the local Huron Clean Water Program and have participated in over 3,000 projects across our watershed. These projects include manure storage decommissioning, livestock access restriction, wellhead protection, cover crop incentive, erosion control and wetland restoration.
