We have implemented a corporate sustainability reporting strategy, moving to a biannual online format that we believe will ensure up-to-date and easily accessible information for all stakeholders.
The sustainability section of the company website provides detailed information on our efforts to balance the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic. The web pages contain sustainability performance data, fulfilling the requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) G4 reporting guidelines. The GRI framework is considered the gold standard of balanced, transparent sustainability reporting, and Resolute is proud to be among the first companies in the forest products industry globally to meet the most recent reporting standards. Company History

Starting in 1820, in the midst of the Industrial Revolution, and over the following two centuries, the company grew from 20 sawmills along the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec into a global leader in the forest products industry with over 40 pulp, paper, wood products, tissue and energy facilities across North America.

We have successfully weathered technological revolutions; two World Wars; the Great Depression of the 1930s; globalization; several pandemics, including cholera, the Spanish flu and now COVID-19; and changing economic and social conditions. We have flourished because of the unwavering support of our employees, customers and investors, the communities in which we operate, as well as our partners in both the business world and Indigenous communities.

For 200 years, Resolute and its predecessor companies have been transforming a renewable resource into products that consumers depend on in their daily lives. Here are some of the many milestones we achieved along the way.

Our Thunder Bay (Ontario) sawmill, which operates under a unique business model with Resolute and the Fort William First Nation, is the first facility in Canada to work under regulations created under the First Nations Commercial and Industrial Development Act, which facilitates industrial development with First Nations on their land.

Company Facts

Collaborations with Aboriginal Peoples
Resolute developed an Aboriginal Peoples Policy in 2013 following an analysis of industry best practices. The policy outlines our commitment to building strong relationships, ensuring that Aboriginal communities are consulted in decisions impacting their communities, and we work to develop shared economic prosperity. In keeping with our principles of corporate social, environmental and economic sustainability, Resolute has implemented Aboriginal Procurement Policy Guidelines to further strengthen our commitment to Aboriginal communities across Ontario and Quebec. Our goal is to provide equitable access to commercial opportunities and to promote the economic participation of Aboriginal peoples and businesses in the forest products sector.

Corporate Philanthropy
Resolute Forest Products strives to be a good corporate citizen that supports the needs and interests of the communities where we operate and beyond. Our community contributions provide financial, human and material support, as well as in-kind staff time donated to non-profit or humanitarian organizations and countless volunteer hours undertaken by our civic-minded employees. In 2019, our donations and sponsorships – at both the local and corporate levels – totaled over $1 million last year. In addition, the annual Resolute golf tournament, benefiting the Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, raised C$255,000 for five health organizations, including $120,000 to the Dolbeau-Mistassini and Roberval hospital foundations, respectively, plus $5,000 each to local pediatric cancer organizations Leucan, On the Tip of the Toes Foundation and Relay for Life.
For our community in Thunder Bay, we have made financial donations, as well as, in kind donations to a variety of local organizations.

Optimizing Fiber Use
Our manufacturing facilities and processes optimize fiber use, reducing waste and creating value. Harvested trees are processed into lumber, mainly for construction or renovation of houses, which preserves the carbon accumulated in the wood for decades. Processing a log at a sawmill generates by-products, mainly wood chips, sawdust, shavings and bark. The bark is used to generate energy, while chips and other residues are used mainly to produce pulp and paper. Our wood remanufacturing facilities produce box spring components, finger joints, furring strips and I-joists, further ensuring optimal fiber use. For the little waste that is left, we identify beneficial-use alternatives, such as land spreading, reducing what we send to landfills.
