Growing Forest Literacy Together: PLT Canada and the Truck Loggers Association

June 25, 2025

By: Ellen Long, Director of Education and Forest Literacy at PLT Canada

At Project Learning Tree Canada (PLT Canada), we know that when teachers feel confident bringing nature into their classrooms, the impact can last a lifetime. That’s why partnerships like the one we’ve built with the Truck Loggers Association (TLA) are so important.

This year, thanks to TLA’s generous support, we were able to deliver two professional development workshops for educators in British Columbia, helping over 35 educators deepen their background knowledge of the important role of trees and forests.

“Fantastic and engaging PD! Thank you for all your hard work.”

PLT Canada explore your environment k-8 guideIn Prince George, BC, we teamed up with School Division 57 to host a full-day workshop during an existing professional development day. Local teachers joined us to dive into PLT Canada’s award-winning Explore Your Environment: K–8 Activity Guide and discover new ways to integrate forest literacy into their everyday lessons. The teachers were enthusiastic and eager to bridge the connections between their classroom and the forest. We look forward to expanding this partnership and continuing to work with school divisions in British Columbia.

“Great resources and hands-on examples of activities were shared — and we got an amazing activity book out of it!”

A few months later, in Victoria, BC, we partnered with an outdoor education professor at the University of Victoria to reach a group of pre- and in-service educators. Pre-service and in-service teachers spent a full day exploring PLT Canada’s resources, engaging in hands-on activities, and building their confidence in teaching about forests and sustainability. Integrating PLT Canada training into Bachelor of Education programs helps ensure that teachers enter their careers with a strong background in the important role of trees and forests, as well as practical ways to integrate this knowledge into their classrooms every day.

“The resources provided were fantastic and super applicable. It was a great opportunity to connect with other professionals as well. Thank you!”

It’s partnerships like this that show how sector collaboration can help spark curiosity and knowledge in the next generation. Together with the TLA, we’re ensuring that educators have the tools they need to connect young people to the forest and help them understand the vital role that sustainable forestry plays in their communities.

Big thanks to the Truck Loggers Association for investing in forest literacy and helping us build a greener future for all Canadians!

Let’s grow this impact together. If you’d like to help bring PLT Canada workshops to your community or sponsor resources for teachers and students in your region, please reach out to Ellen Long, Director of Education and Forest Literacy at PLT Canada, at Ellen.Long@forests.org.
