This series will walk you through the use and implementation of our Nature of Fire Activity Collection.
Project Learning Tree Canada’s themed Activity Collections organize activities around a theme or topic. Nature of Fire features three PLT Canada activities for educators of students in grades 6–8. Use it to invite students to investigate wildland fire and ecosystem change. Designed to be flexible, the activities can be used as individual, stand-alone lessons, or all together as a cohesive unit of instruction using a storyline technique.

The first webinar walked participants through Nature of Fire‘s “Nothing Succeeds Like Succession” activity, where students read a story about succession and investigate the connections among plants, animals, and successional stages in a local ecosystem.

The second webinar explored Nature of Fire‘s “Living with Fire” activity, where students learn about the three elements that a fire needs to burn and find out how this “fire triangle” can be used to prevent and manage wildland fires.

The final webinar shared more about Nature of Fire‘s “Burning Issues” activity, where students graph changes in atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) over the course of several decades to explore the relationship among CO2, the Earth’s climate, and wildfires, and suggest ways to reduce negative effects of fire.

James Thordarson is the Coordinator of Forest Education at Project Learning Tree Canada. James has a Master of Science in Forestry from Lakehead University as well as an official designation as Registered Professional Forester in the province of Ontario. James works closely with educators and those in the forest and environment sector to create virtual and in person resources to teach students more about the forest.
