Rithik Mohammed & John Slobodian are Forest Protection Interns for Millar Western Forest Products Ltd.

Rithik and John are actively involved in our fire patrol work; when the wildfire hazard level is high, they spend a lot of time in helicopters, flying across the forest management area to check for any fire starts, taking immediate action if they do spot one and calling in the Alberta government to take control. They are also responsible for our Pine Beetle Program where they are checking beetle traps, counting beetles, and completing an analysis.

As a Woodlands Summer Student with Mercer, Arianna's job is about being available to help in different aspects of the Woodlands department where needed and as needed. It can involve planning, silviculture, road maintenance, community engagement, land use, and more — she often doesn’t know what my week will look like in advance and very few days are exactly alike.

As the Silviculture Supervisor, Peggy manages all activities pertaining to tree improvement and reforestation for the Mercer Peace River. Reporting directly to the Woodlands Planning Superintendent, the Silviculture Supervisor works alongside the various operations of the Woodlands department in the reforestation process. This position helps lead any Summer Student or Forestry Training positions that report to the Planning Superintendent.

Ian Kwantes always planned to have a career connected to the outdoors. A BSc degree in environmental science and a second BSc in forest management along with summer jobs through the interior and coast of B.C laid the groundwork for a career at Weyerhaeuser. With a variety of roles including roads, harvesting operations, and planning, Ian is currently the planning coordinator for Pembina timberlands. This role includes stakeholder and government relations, as well as ensuring consistency between the strategic and operational plans.

Robyn Perkins coordinates the migratory and breeding bird monitoring programs at Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory that help provide a better understanding of the overall health of bird populations in the boreal forest. Daily duties at the station include visual counts, a daily census, as well as “bird banding” where birds are captured in mist nets, assessed, and banded with light-weight numbered bands before being released again.

Cori Klassen is the Executive Director for the Lesser Slave Forest Education Society. Her job is to run the day to day operations of the small, non-profit organization. "Over his 23-year career with West Fraser, Rob has taken on a number of different progressive roles in the company. He started off his career with West Fraser holding various positions with the Woods groups in both Chasm and 100 Mile House. He then became General Manager for 100 Mile Lumber. He then moved on to being the General Manager for Hinton Wood Products. In 2017, he became a Regional Manager based out of Quesnel and has held this position ever since.
