Roots to Harvest

Roots to Harvest uses food as a tool to work with young people. Through sustainable urban agriculture, young people who face barriers to employment, gain employment skills and a deep appreciation for the land that transfers into other aspects of their lives.

Roots to Harvest began as a project at Lakehead University in 2007 and since then has grown into its own, not for profit, youth and food focused organization that collaborates with many different partners and stakeholders regionally, provincially and nationally. Our work reaches young people and people who are marginalized, engaging them in meaningful education and employment that builds a sense of belonging and citizenry. Roots to Harvest works with high school students, adult education learners, newcomers to Canada and northern and remote communities to build capacity through education and employment, with food (growing, cooking, eating) as the connection.

We run four urban agriculture sites in Thunder Bay as well as facilitate 5 high school gardens.
Two of our sites include fruit and nut trees, bushes and wild edibles.
We raise bees and rabbits on two of our urban agriculture sites.
We strive to employ up to 25 young people each season between two different urban agriculture programs.
