Hike Nova Scotia Society

Hike Nova Scotia is a nonprofit organization that encourages and promotes a growing hiking culture throughout our great province. We strive to be the voice for those who hike, walk and snowshoe as well as those who build and maintain hiking trails. With every step we’re building a community of outdoor adventure enthusiasts.

Hike NS formed in 2007 as a registered not-for-profit society. It is governed by a Board of Directors with strong regional and special interest representation. Our work is guided by a strategic plan along with provincial-level strategies championed by the Provincial government including the Shared Strategy for Advancing Recreation in Nova Scotia, the Shared Strategy for Trails in Nova Scotia and the Let’s Get Moving Nova Scotia: action plan for increasing physical activity. We have recently signed onto Recreation Nova Scotia’s Anti-Racism Charter.

Hike Nova Scotia offers a wide variety of events and programming including: Fall and Winter Guided Hike & Walk series; NS Walks weekly walking group program; NS chapter of the International Appalachian Trail; Hiker Challenge program; outdoor skill courses and webinars; Hiking Summit annual conference; and the new Trail Builders Network. Hike NS is member-based and we keep them up-to-date on the latest hiking news, trails and events. Hike NS engages in policy development on hiking issues, striving to keep our great wilderness areas protected.

Key partners in our work include the following organizations for some of our major initiatives: International Appalachian Trail; Hike Canada; Outdoor Council of Canada; Leave No Trace Canada. We have many more partners locally within Nova Scotia such as hiking clubs, trail groups, other provincial and regional nonprofits, provincial government, municipalities and others.
