Take Me Outside is a non-profit organization committed to raising awareness and facilitating action on nature connection and outdoor learning in schools across Canada. We believe in a future where spending time outside playing, exploring and learning is a regular and significant part of every student’s day. We work collaboratively with other organizations, school boards and individuals to encourage children and youth to spend more time outside through various projects and initiatives. TMO’s target population is students and educators across Canada who we reach mainly through the education system. Our goal is to encourage schools to extend the learning environment beyond the desk and four walls and to use the great outdoors as part of the regular teaching practice. The ultimate goal is to encourage more time spent outside during the school day to counter balance excessive screen time and sedentary tendencies. Our programs are simple, fun and accessible to all.
Take Me Outside began in 2011, when our founder and Executive Director Colin Harris ran over 7,600km across Canada to raise awareness of the importance of outside learning. To celebrate the end of his journey and to continue the momentum of raising awareness on this important issue, Take Me Outside was established, alongside annual events such as Take Me Outside Day, and the Learning Challenge. Over the years, we have been able to build our campaigns and reach many more educators and students, aiming to remind folks about the importance of unplugging and spending time outside, being active and connecting with nature. Most recently, Take Me Outside Day reached 9000 educators and 400,000 students across Canada during our week of events in October 2021.
