Régénération Canada

Regeneration Canada ( RC ) is a nonprofit with the mission of promoting regenerative agriculture to mitigate climate change, restore biodiversity, improve water cycles, and support healthy and resilient food systems.

Regenerative agriculture refers to a set of farming practices based on principles of land management which reverse current trends of degradation in soil, water and air quality by enhancing the soil ecosystem and restoring its biology. Principles of regenerative agriculture aim to draw down atmospheric carbon into soil and the aboveground biomass, helping to reverse climate change. Regenerating our soil is our most promising opportunity to simultaneously reverse climate change and foster healthy food systems. In Canada, a growing number of farmers are implementing regenerative practices, but still very few Canadians are aware of this approach to growing food that goes beyond sustainable.

Founded in 2017, RC is the first national non-profit in Canada to focus entirely on promoting soil regeneration as a solution to climate change. With a focus on gathering a diversity of stakeholders who contribute to soil regeneration and on raising awareness, education and network building, the organization has had early successes in achieving its mission.
RC first started creating momentum around soil regeneration as a climate solution through its popular Living Soils Symposiums, a yearly bilingual event that cumulatively gathered 2200 people from over 30 countries over the last four years, including many renowned leaders in the field from Canada and abroad. More than just a typical conference, the Symposium has gathered year after year a diversity of stakeholders and its collaborative setting has led to relationship building between industry and the public, and to the birth of new initiatives and partnerships that are advancing regenerative agriculture today, namely the production of recently launched Québécois documentary “Humus” featuring RC regenerative farmer members and the “50 year flannel shirt” initiative, a collaborative regenerative fiber project. A member-based organization, Regeneration Canada’s growing multi-stakeholder network gathers over 400 organizational and individual members including farmers of all scales and production systems, consultants, agronomists, students, researchers, businesses, nonprofits, policymakers and engaged citizens from across the country. Part of the organization’s strength lies in the diversity of its network in terms of types of production, including both organic and non-organic farms, small-scale and large acreage farms from every region of Canada. Our farmers are associated with farmer organizations and networks across the country and serve as ambassadors for regenerative farming in their communities.

Regeneration Canada has engaged since its inception in creating partnerships with multiple organizations contributing to a transition towards regenerative agriculture, in order to give momentum to the regenerative movement by empowering their work and connecting a network of groups across Canada. Each of our 58 partner organizations has expertise in their niche and many of them have important regional networks. The more we can build relationships between these organizations, the greater the opportunity for collaborations, making each group more effective. Alignment of each organization’s mission with a cohesive national vision can help spread funding in the most strategic ways to catalyze large-scale systemic change.
