This job provides essential support to Nature Canada’s rural engagement work to protect and recover threatened populations of Ontario’s swallow populations. Specifically, the successful candidate will join Nature Canada’s team of dedicated conservationists to engage farmers in day-to-day actions in support of swallows including promoting beneficial practices on the farm, organizing workshops for farmers, participating in events, and communicating activities and results through Nature Canada media channels. The intern will also participate directly in scientific research and monitoring of swallow roost sites (places where thousands of swallows gather for up to a month prior to their migrations south in the fall). This will include interpreting weather radar data, communicating to a network of on-site monitors, updating website content.
The conservation results of this work will be more farmers and rural landowner undertaking actions that benefit Ontario’s swallow populations and improved science and conservation with regard to swallow roost sites, which, until recently have received virtually no conservation attention. For the intern, they will complete this position with a rich, varied, and challenging work experience that will strengthen a wide-range of skills including applied field biology, interpersonal communications, planning and time management.
